President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid tribute to Olusegun (Segun) Awolowo, who passed away at 62, describing his death as a deeply painful loss to his family and the nation.
The President’s condolence message was released on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu said Awolowo, a grandson of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, upheld the ideals for which the Awolowo family is renowned. He noted that the late lawyer carried himself with dignity and made notable contributions to public service.
“Segun represented the Awolowo heritage in character and conduct. Like his grandfather, he was committed to truth, justice and the advancement of Nigeria,” the President said.
Tinubu also highlighted Awolowo’s achievements as Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), where he served from 2013 to 2021 — the longest tenure in the agency’s history.
He extended condolences to Awolowo’s wife, children, his mother Sisi Abah Folawiyo, and the entire Awolowo family. He also sympathised with the government and people of Ogun State and the South-West region.
The Awolowo family announced his passing on Thursday, describing him as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
