Opposition realignment talks have intensified ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso weighing the possibility of running on a joint presidential ticket under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The move, if finalised, would position the duo against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is also seeking the ADC presidential ticket. The development is part of broader efforts to forge a united opposition capable of challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
Sources close to the discussions say former President Olusegun Obasanjo is facilitating talks between both camps and has urged Kwankwaso to consider the vice-presidential slot on an Obi-led ticket. While Obi has formally joined the ADC and expressed interest in contesting again, Kwankwaso remains in the NNPP but has acknowledged ongoing consultations with political leaders.
Insiders say the preferred option is to confront Atiku directly at the ADC primaries, though an alternative plan involving another political platform is also being considered should the process prove unfavourable.
Political observers note that an Obi–Kwankwaso ticket could combine Obi’s youth-driven, urban support base with Kwankwaso’s influence in Kano and parts of the North. However, they warn that internal party dynamics and opposition disunity could once again weaken the challenge if consensus is not reached.
