Peter Obi has criticised the life imprisonment of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, warning that the decision could heighten tensions in the Southeast if not handled with sensitivity.
In a statement posted on his X handle, the former presidential candidate said Kanu’s arrest and conviction reflected leadership failures, arguing that the concerns he raised should have been addressed through dialogue and institutional reforms.
Obi said many countries have resolved internal conflicts through negotiation when legal actions proved insufficient. He urged the Federal Government, the Presidency and the Council of State to prioritise political engagement to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
Kanu, who has been in detention since 2021 after his controversial transfer from Kenya, was sentenced to life imprisonment on terrorism-related charges. His lawyers insist he was subjected to extraordinary rendition, a claim the government denies.
Obi called for calm, reconciliation and a dialogue-driven solution, saying only inclusive governance can deliver lasting peace.
