The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has announced that Nigeria will receive a new long-acting HIV prevention injection this month as part of efforts to reduce new infections.
The agency said the drug, Lenacapavir, has been approved by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and is expected to strengthen the country’s HIV prevention strategy.
Administered twice a year, the injection provides an alternative to daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and has shown high effectiveness in clinical trials.
NACA noted that preparations are ongoing for its rollout in selected states, as Nigeria continues efforts to curb the spread of HIV nationwide.
