The Lagos State Police Command says the five corpses recovered along the Oreta riverbank in Igbogbo, Ikorodu, were victims of cult violence.
Residents raised alarm on Wednesday after discovering the bodies of young men dumped by the riverside. A viral video clip showed the lifeless victims, including one in a blue hoodie lying facedown and another in a bloodstained black-and-white shirt.
Confirming the incident, Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh said investigations had begun but stressed the killings were cult-related.
“We recovered the bodies and deployed crime scene experts. Directives have been given on areas to touch, and the outcome will be made public,” he said in an interview.
Jimoh disclosed that specialised anti-cultism squads had been established across the state and warned parents to caution their children.
“In the last two days, constant patrols have helped us contain the situation. The five bodies we recovered were linked to cultism, but the situation is under control,” he said.
The violence in Oreta came barely 24 hours after another man was killed in Bayeku, also in Ikorodu. Earlier in the week, three suspected cultists were murdered during a festival on Lagos Island.
Police say more arrests have been made since the initial 26 suspects were taken into custody as authorities intensify their crackdown on cult violence across Lagos.
