Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be his final appearance on football’s biggest stage, signalling the nearing end of his extraordinary career.
Speaking on Tuesday via video link at a Saudi-hosted global forum on tourism and investment, the 40-year-old Al Nassr forward said the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will be his last.
“Definitely, yes. I’ll be 41 years old, and I think it will be the right moment,” Ronaldo said. “I feel very good right now. I’m still scoring goals and feel quick and sharp, but let’s be honest—‘soon’ probably means one or two years.”
Having scored more than 950 goals for club and country, Ronaldo reflected on his remarkable journey.
“I’ve given everything to football. I’ve achieved so much and broken many records, both at club level and with the national team. I’m proud of all I’ve done. Now it’s time to enjoy the moment and live in the present,” he added.
Ronaldo also spoke affectionately about his son, Cristiano Jr., who currently plays for Portugal’s Under-16 team.
“I want him to be happy and free, whether he chooses football or something else. I’ll always be there to support him,” he said.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner hopes to feature in his sixth World Cup as Portugal edge closer to qualification. His best run in the tournament came in 2006 when Portugal reached the semi-finals before losing to France.
