Newcastle United have secured their first domestic trophy in 70 years, defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Tens of thousands of Magpies fans descended upon the capital to witness their team break the long-standing drought against last year’s winners. Among those celebrating in the stands were TV presenters Declan Donnelly and Ant McPartlin, while joyous scenes erupted across Newcastle.
The club last lifted silverware in Europe with the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969, but their previous domestic triumph came in the 1955 FA Cup. Meanwhile, Liverpool, boasting 38 major trophies since Newcastle’s last, entered the final as strong favorites.
Liverpool had dominated their league encounter last month with a 2-0 victory and currently sit atop the Premier League table. However, Newcastle were the better side in the first half and took the lead just before halftime when local hero Dan Burn powered home a header from a corner.
Early in the second half, Newcastle found the net again, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Moments later, Alexander Isak struck to officially double their advantage, sparking wild celebrations among the Geordie faithful.
Liverpool pulled one back in stoppage time through Federico Chiesa after a tense VAR check, but Newcastle held firm to claim a historic victory and end their seven-decade wait for domestic silverware.
