Chelsea edged past Brentford in a fiercely contested west London derby at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, securing a 2-1 victory to record their fifth consecutive Premier League win. The result narrows the gap to Liverpool at the top of the table to just two points, although the Reds have a game in hand.
Nicolas Jackson delivered the decisive blow with a late strike, capping off a performance that saw Chelsea dominate much of the contest.
Marc Cucurella opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, heading home to give Chelsea a deserved lead after a strong first half. However, the game took a dramatic turn after full-time, as Cucurella was shown a red card following an off-the-ball incident.
Jackson missed a golden opportunity to extend Chelsea’s advantage on the hour mark but redeemed himself in the 80th minute with a composed finish to double the Blues’ lead.
Brentford, who had earlier struck the crossbar, found a glimmer of hope in the final minute of normal time when Bryan Mbeumo pulled one back. Despite their late surge, the Bees, now sitting 11th in the table, could not find an equalizer.
Chelsea’s win continues their impressive run of form and keeps them firmly in contention near the top of the Premier League standings.
