Prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has voiced support for President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills, amid strong opposition from northern leaders. Gumi described the proposed reforms as beneficial for Nigerians overall.
According to The Nation, some northern governors, lawmakers, and traditional leaders have opposed the bills, arguing that their implementation could exacerbate poverty in the region.
Defending the reforms, President Tinubu explained that the four bills aim to simplify tax administration, reduce burdens on low-income earners, and eliminate double taxation and excessive levies.
Sheikh Gumi’s endorsement has introduced a notable perspective into the ongoing debate. He reportedly reviewed the draft documents carefully—an effort that, according to reports, many of the northern politicians opposing the reforms had not undertaken.
While Gumi praised the overall potential of the reforms, he acknowledged concerns about the Value Added Tax (VAT) component and called for its review.
“I believe the contentious VAT issue is the only part that needs to be reviewed; otherwise, it is a good package for all,” Gumi stated.
President Tinubu also highlighted that the reforms aim to create a fairer and more inclusive tax system, reduce reliance on oil revenue, and boost local economic activities.
