Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s dedication to Nigeria’s progress has never been in doubt among those who have followed her journey. Like every true patriot, she envisions a nation where young people can thrive in a supportive and enabling environment.
Human development is the bedrock of economic growth. However, Nigeria’s struggling economy and limited opportunities for entrepreneurship have fuelled the rise of the “Japa” syndrome, an increasing trend of mass migration, particularly among the youth, in search of better prospects abroad.
This growing mentality of seeking greener pastures in so-called developed nations is a challenge Natasha is determined to address.
It is for this reason that the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations, under her leadership, has raised concerns over this trend and is actively working on strategies to curb the mass exodus of Nigerians in search of better opportunities abroad
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, underscored the need to reverse the trend for the country’s benefit.
“This committee will collaborate with relevant stakeholders to encourage Nigerians, particularly the youth, to have greater confidence in their country rather than feeling compelled to leave in search of better prospects,” she stated.
“Patriotism is cultivated, not imposed. We must identify practical steps to build our economy using the strength of our diaspora community.
“We will examine models from countries like India, Pakistan, and Egypt, which have successfully developed their economies to retain a larger percentage of their citizens.
“To initiate this process, the committee will compile a comprehensive database of Nigerians in the diaspora, categorized by country, and collaborate with international organizations to create opportunities that can attract many of them back home.
“India, for instance, has successfully reversed the ‘Japa’ syndrome by becoming a global hub for Information and Communication Technology, creating numerous job opportunities for its citizens,” Akpoti-Uduaghan added.
Former committee chairman Senator Victor Umeh (APGA, Anambra) expressed confidence in Akpoti-Uduaghan’s leadership, commending her ability to drive impactful initiatives.
“With Senator Natasha at the helm, I am certain the committee will make meaningful progress in addressing the ‘Japa’ phenomenon,” Umeh stated.
