Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has stated that he is not opposed to forming a coalition ahead of the next presidential election.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Obi clarified that his comments in a recent interview were misrepresented, leading to a misleading narrative about his position.
“I have observed that my honest interview yesterday was misquoted by many media outlets, creating a false narrative that misrepresents my position,” he wrote.
Setting the record straight, Obi emphasized that while he supports coalition efforts, he would never align with any group solely focused on seizing power without prioritizing the welfare of Nigerians.
“I am not against coalition. In truth, I support it—not for power-grabbing, but to position Nigeria for greatness,” he stated.
“I have not, and will never, advocate for any coalition or alliance that does not prioritize the welfare and progress of the ordinary Nigerian. Discussions about governance must focus on how it impacts the everyday citizen, addressing critical issues such as access to quality healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation.”
Obi warned against alliances driven solely by political ambition, noting that past coalitions formed without clear purpose or vision have worsened Nigeria’s challenges, leaving citizens to suffer the consequences of poor governance.
“Leadership must be about service, not self-interest. It must focus on building a nation with opportunities for all, where justice and equity are non-negotiable, and where governance truly works for the people,” he added.
Reaffirming his vision for a “New Nigeria,” Obi stressed that power should not be pursued for its own sake but wielded responsibly to improve lives and secure a better future for generations to come.
His comments come amid discussions about a possible coalition of political parties seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
