A new smartphone designed specifically for children, featuring built-in safety features and remote monitoring for parents, has debuted in the UK.
The device runs on Pinwheel, a custom operating system installed on existing smartphones that works across all major networks. According to the US-based company, Pinwheel offers a better solution than traditional basic phones, which children may find unappealing, or advanced smartphones lacking sufficient safety measures.
With Pinwheel, parents can remotely monitor their child’s text messages and call history, approve contacts, set app time limits, and manage a curated library of age-appropriate apps. Notably, the system excludes social media platforms and web browsers, prioritizing safety and focus.
The launch comes amid growing concerns about the effects of social media and excessive screen time on children’s mental and physical health. While major phone makers and online platforms have introduced parental controls, these systems often require parents to use the same devices or create platform-specific accounts, which can be cumbersome.
Pinwheel addresses these challenges by offering a centralized online portal, accessible via desktop or mobile, allowing parents to adjust settings remotely. This flexibility enables families to gradually introduce more features as children mature, fostering responsible technology use.
